The Tobacco Advertising Prohibition

Often the example of significant others (parents and friends) is considered a major reason for people to start smoking. Examples of smoking role-models are easily found in the cinema and on television. This is partly the reason why in many countries advertisements for tobacco products is prohibited. This wasn’t always the case.

Ever since the banning of advertisements of cigarettes on television and radio, manufacturers tried to market their products in other ways to get the attention of potential customers: product placement in movies is an obvious way. Since the 90s smoking in films is increasing. Other ways to promote smoking include sponsorship of cultural events and pop concerts, car rallies, or using the same name for a clothing brand that is formally independent from the cigarette manufacturer. In all these cases advertising is the underlying goal.
